Stichting Lumen Mundi is a school for children with a physical and/or intellectual disability. The school opened in February 2022 in Siniensi-Upper East-Region in Ghana. This is one of the poorest areas.
These children are seen in the community as a punishment from God. Unfortunately, the children pay for this punishment. It is not uncommon that the children only receive one meal and no further care or love. Or, as I heard recently: they are sometimes even poisoned by the parents!
The plan is to build small houses later where a group of children will live with 2 adults. The parents will remain involved and participate in decisions about their child's upbringing. An extra important goal is the acceptance of the children in the community.
